IP equals Internet Protocol

Every computer connected to the Internet has a unique identifier called an IP address. On many networks the IP address of a computer is always the same, or "static". On other networks a random DHCP IP address is assigned and is referred to as a "dynamic" IP address. If a system uses dynamic addressing, the IP can change quite often. Read more...

Award Winning PageProtocol Directory  Site contains information on all known networking protocols from ATM to IPX and TCP/IP. Well laid-out with HTML and PDF versions of protocol information. Tech info TCP/IP, and IP Switching Protocols.

CIDR

Short for Classless Inter-Domain Routing, an IP addressing scheme that replaces the older system based on classes A, B, and C, with CIDR. A single IP address can be used to designate many unique IP addresses. A CIDR IP address looks like a normal IP address except that it ends with a slash followed by a number, called the IP network prefix. Read more about CIDR at Webopedia.com or Wikipedia.com, "A CIDR-compliant address is written with a suffix indicating the number of bits in the prefix, such as 192.168.0.0/16. This permits more efficient use of increasingly scarce IPv4 addresses". Other terms in common use for CIDR are: Supernet and Subnet (Subnetting made classless Inter-Domain Routing possible).

The difference between a classful and classless routing protocol is very simple. Classless protocols include the mask in the address while classful protocols do not.

Microsoft Windows Tracert

To use tracert, click Start --> Run --> type cmd -->  at the command prompt type cd.. and then Enter, type cd.. again, until you are at the root of the drive. The command prompt will look like this C:\> now type this command:

tracert yahoo.com or tracert wikipedia.com

Notice the Yahoo! or Wikipedia.com Static IP address is displayed. To save a trace route type this command at the command prompt: tracert yahoo.com > tracert.txt.  (With a space on either side of the > symbol) The > symbol redirects the output of the tracert command. When the cursor returns to a command prompt the trace route is complete. To find the saved trace route, right-click the Start button, click Explore, click on or "select" your main drive (C:) and in the list displayed on the right side of your screen is the trace route: tracert.txt.

To append the trace route with another trace route, type this command: tracert yahoo.com >> tracert.txt  If you are experiencing slow Internet, slow download speeds or high latency, your ISP may request a trace route, copy and paste the trace route into an email message.

Try VisualRoute Server with a graphic global interface. You will see the route taken when a trace route is sent from their server to your IP address. Or, choose a location and try their Speed Test.

Ping

Use Ping when troubleshooting web site accessibility and connection problems, type: ping <domain name> or ping <IP address> This command is especially useful for Network Troubleshooting: Can you ping the static or dynamic IP of other computers in your Intranet?

Do I need another Firewall?

Before you connect your computer to the Internet, you should install a firewall. This is either a software program,  hardware or both that helps protect your PC against hackers and many computer viruses and worms. If you have the Microsoft Windows® XP operating system, you can use its " built-in Internet

The Wise Old Blogger recommends a firewall. The Zone Alarm Firewall or PC Tools Firewall Plus, AntiVirus, and AntiSpyware are available as Free programs and recommended.

Remember to use Windows Update

Antivirus software with automatic updates enabled is essential and when used with Antispyware will find and remove Malware (Malicious Software), viruses, worms and trojans. Another Antispyware program that is "Free for personal use" is Adaware.

Internet History

Although we think of the Internet as a relatively new entity, its origins date back over 40 years. Here's a brief timeline highlighting important dates in Internet history from Webopedia.com:
