Random restarts |
|
Q. I upgraded my
computer and now the machine restarts at random. It does not seem to
matter what program I am using. It just happens. What could be the
reason?
A. For starters, the power supply could be on the verge of failure. But I'll bet that's not it. Since you added new parts, you might not have enough power in the system to run it all. Power needs are often overlooked. To figure out how much power you need: Make a list of all the components in your computer and the power each requires. You will find the component's power requirements on the manufacturer's Web site. When you are done, your list may look like this: Pentium 4 processor -- 70W Video card -- 50W 10/100 Ethernet card -- 4W CD-ROM drive -- 25W 256 MB of RAM - 16W Of course, there will be more things on this list, including the motherboard, fans, hard drive and floppy drive. You can get a complete listing of your components by using the free Belarc Advisor. When you have listed the components, add up their required wattage and multiply by 1.8. The resulting number is the power supply wattage you need. The wattage of your current power supply is listed on its label. If yours is underpowered, or marginal, buy another. A 350-watt power supply, which should be more than enough, probably will run less than $50. Please note: May 16, 2004 from The Wise Old Blogger: Microsoft says that the "W32.Sasser.worm and its variants" could cause random restarts. Those who have enabled the Windows XP Firewall are protected from the vector this worm attacks, which is TCP Port 445. Most third party firewalls also block this attack vector by default.
